To protect the Berlin Data Centre against fire, the building is divided into sealed, independent fire compartments to prevent a potential fire from spreading. Only non-combustible, halogen-free materials have been used throughout the building, minimising the risk of smoke generation. In the unlikely event of a fire, the “Very Intelligent Early Warning” (V.I.E.W.) system activates the fire alarm, smoke extraction system and dry-pipe sprinkler system. This suppression system is specifically designed for use in data centres and is safe for both people and sensitive colocation areas, making it particularly well suited to protecting critical infrastructure.

Power is supplied via dedicated underground medium-voltage lines and multiple MVA transformers. The data centre also features a redundant A&B power distribution system. Both a rotary UPS system and a static UPS system, each with N+1 redundancy, protect against power fluctuations and provide up to 15 minutes of backup power.

In the unlikely event of a power failure, a diesel emergency generator supplies the data centre with multiple MVA of power. To ensure that the emergency generators can start up immediately and take over the power supply within one minute, this scenario is tested monthly. The on-site diesel fuel reserves are sized to ensure uninterrupted operation of the data centre for at least 24 hours.

To ensure continuous energy efficiency and reduce cooling costs, the Berlin Data Centre uses hot aisle and cold aisle separation. Cold air is directed precisely where it is needed to cool the installed equipment. In addition to temperature, humidity levels and system integrity are monitored 24/7. A slight positive pressure is also maintained in the colocation areas to minimise the ingress of dust particles and reduce the risk of long-term damage to equipment.

As a carrier-neutral data centre, this facility offers greater scalability by allowing customers to choose the carriers best suited to their individual requirements. The existing multiple redundant carrier connections also ensure a high level of resilience and availability.
