Amsterdam Data Centre

Server Housing • Racks • Carrier-Neutral • Multi-Data Centre

The carrier-neutral Amsterdam data centre is ideally suited to hosting IT infrastructures where high bandwidth and low latency are essential, thanks to the AMS-IX and NL-IX internet exchanges and the numerous internet carriers available on site.

Environmentally Friendly and Secure

Through the strict implementation of an effective climate control strategy, the data centre achieves outstanding energy efficiency. In addition, the data centre sources 100% of its electricity from renewable energy sources. Furthermore, ISO 14001 certification ensures the continuous monitoring and optimisation of all operational processes with a focus on environmental protection. The fully fenced site can only be accessed via a monitored vehicle or pedestrian entrance. Mantraps and three-factor authentication are among the measures used to control access. In addition to its ISO 27001 certification, the Amsterdam data centre is also certified to ISO 9001 and PCI DSS standards.

The Data Centre Amsterdam: A Closer Look

  • ✓ 24/7 security personnel and on-site staff
  • ✓ Three-factor access control and electronic access system
  • ✓ Mantrap security portals

When it comes to security in a data centre, access control is a key priority. The security concept at the Amsterdam data centre is particularly impressive, with measures including a fully fenced site secured by an electric security fence. A vehicle access gate regulates and controls entry to the site. In addition, a monitored, separately secured loading and collection area is available. The on-site security personnel, present around the clock, are supported by continuous video surveillance covering all access points and traffic areas.

Inside the facility, multiple mantrap security portals provide the highest levels of security and access control. These prevent unauthorised individuals from entering or following others through controlled access points (tailgating prevention). Access to sensitive technical areas is granted only following three-factor authentication. In addition, all racks are equipped with their own access control systems, while intrusion sensors installed in the racks trigger an alarm to our central monitoring system in the event of unauthorised access.

  • ✓ Division into fire compartments
  • ✓ VESDA smoke detection system
  • ✓ Gas fire suppression system

For the earliest possible detection of a fire, the Amsterdam data centre uses a VESDA smoke detection system. Thanks to its continuous air-sampling technology, the system reliably detects even the smallest amounts of smoke and sends an alarm to the central monitoring system. This ensures that appropriate action can be taken at an early stage.

Should a fire nevertheless occur, the Amsterdam data centre relies on a proven gas fire suppression system that provides effective protection while being safe and gentle on IT equipment. In addition, structural fire protection measures have been implemented to F60 standard, and the data centre has been divided into separate fire compartments. This ensures that fires can be effectively contained within the smallest possible area and extinguished as quickly as possible.

  • ✓ Full N+2 redundancy of the power infrastructure
  • ✓ N+2 backup generators and UPS protection
  • ✓ Dual power protection for racks

The Amsterdam data centre demonstrates what Green IT can look like in practice, achieving an impressive Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) rating of 1.2. This value has been achieved through the consistent implementation and continuous improvement of the site’s energy strategy. In addition, the Amsterdam data centre sources 100% renewable electricity generated from wind, solar and biomass. Thanks to the N+2 redundancy of the power infrastructure, continuous availability is ensured.

For maximum resilience, N+2 redundancy has also been implemented in the backup power.

  • ✓ N+2 redundancy of cooling system components
  • ✓ Separation of cold and hot aisles
  • ✓ Indirect free cooling

As the need to use energy more sustainably and efficiently continues to grow, well-designed cooling systems are becoming increasingly important in data centres. An environmentally friendly cooling concept also makes economic sense: the higher efficiency of the cooling equipment helps minimise energy consumption and associated costs. The Amsterdam data centre therefore relies on a strict cold-aisle/hot-aisle configuration. This approach prevents already cooled air from mixing with the heat generated by the housed IT equipment.

The data centre also uses indirect free cooling, whereby outdoor air is used via heat exchangers on colder days to support the cooling system and reduce the load on the cooling equipment. The modular design of the technical areas also ensures that the cooling equipment can be optimally matched to the area requiring cooling. To ensure continuous cooling of the technical areas, the cooling system components at the Amsterdam data centre are designed with N+2 redundancy.

  • ✓ AMS-IX connectivity on-site and partnership with NL-IX
  • ✓ Carrier-neutral
  • ✓ 50+ carriers on-site

AMS-IX is one of the largest internet exchange points in the world. The in-house connection to AMS-IX, combined with the strategic partnership with the NL-IX internet exchange, makes the Amsterdam data centre particularly attractive for hosting IT infrastructures where high bandwidth and low latency are essential.

As a fully carrier-neutral data centre, the site also provides excellent scalability and connectivity, with a choice of more than 50 carriers available on-site. On request, customers can also access the existing connections between our data centre locations in Wuppertal, Düsseldorf and Frankfurt. This enables us to provide Layer 2 connections and wavelengths for applications such as database replication, off-site backups and high-availability setups. These solutions benefit from particularly low latency and enhanced resilience by minimising the need for additional hardware.

As a RIPE member, we can provide IPv4 and IPv6 addresses according to individual requirements and in compliance with RIPE policies. We can also implement specialised routing scenarios such as Anycast across multiple data centres.
